Student members of the New Jersey Future Educators Association chapter at Newark’s American History High School recently spent a few days in Washington, DC and Baltimore thanks, in part, to funding from Field Trip New Jersey and its Pi Chubb Newark Field Trip Fund.
The trip was the culmination of an intensive curriculum that included studying the lives and accomplishments of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Fredrick Douglas, Isaac Myers, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. During weekly Future Educators meetings leading up to the trip, students engaged in group discussions around the different ethnic groups that have contributed to the history of the United States.
Once in Washington, the students visited the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Washington Monument. Each visit emphasized the important role museums, architecture, and monuments play in portraying and preserving a society’s history.
In Baltimore, the group visited Morgan State University, the National Blacks in Wax Museum, the Baltimore World Trade Center, and the Fredrick Douglas – Isaac Myers Museum.
Upon returning from the trip, students compared the Newark Museum with the National Museum of African American History and Culture, created PowerPoint presentations highlighting their experiences from the trip, and edited a video documentary for presentation at a future American History High School assembly.
