Every year, the Community Foundation awards a number of scholarships to students in true financial need from some of New Jersey’s most challenged communities. We continue to be amazed by the quality of the applications we receive from these students, many of whom have overcome extremely difficult circumstances to excel in school and bring their dreams of college education within reach. Their last remaining hurdle is the tremendous financial burden of higher education.
Despite all we do here at the Community Foundation, the number of exceptional students in need continues to rise and we are unable to provide scholarships for each worthy applicant. The more than 150 applications we received this Spring far exceeded the number of scholarships available.
That is why the Community Foundation of New Jersey will match all donations to our Scholarship Opportunity Fund through July 2017, with every dollar going toward the higher education of students who have already been vetted by our scholarship committees.

If our community of fundholders can raise a combined $10,000 by August, we will bring higher education within reach for an additional four New Jersey students like K.L. who would be the first in her family to graduate college but is struggling to support her family in the wake of her father’s death and is contemplating postponing her fall semester, or J.C. who describes college as an opportunity to flee her “hopeless” neighborhood and help other people use painful experiences like her own to empower themselves and learn.
The quality of the scholarship applications we received this year was truly stellar, and we are so proud of the amazing students who are destined for success at schools as far and wide as American University, the County College of Morris, Howard University, Yale, and many others. As you know, a higher education is among the most effective ways to elevate an individual out of poverty – a key factor for many of our scholarship recipients.
As high school graduations soon begin, we ask that you consider making a gift to our Scholarship Opportunity Fund so that we may begin to build a sustainable fund for the young people in our communities who hold so much promise.
Thank you for considering our request and for your continued generosity in our community. If you would like to hear more about our scholarship funds, services, and resources, please do not hesitate to contact Faith Krueger at 973-267-5533 x227.
