Like many of you, we’ve been watching and reading the devastating news reports about the loss of life and catastrophic disaster at the Nepal-China border. Flash flooding and landslides on Aug. 26 swept away and flattened homes, roads, bridges, and buildings throughout the region. Authorities also report that more than 1,000 people have been killed so far and the death toll continues to rise. As of Sept. 1, over 4,400 people — including U.S. citizens — remain missing.
Our hearts are with the families who are mourning and searching for their loved ones. Thankfully, dedicated emergency responders are mobilizing on the ground to lead rescue efforts, provide shelter, and deliver basic supplies. But the scope of support that nonprofit organizations will need to take care of individuals and families, and ensure their long-term well-being, grows by the day.
Many of you have asked our team about ways that you can help, so we’re sharing how we can collectively support Himalayan communities in the region.

- The American Himalayan Foundation (AHF) has dedicated its efforts to improve the lives of Tibetans, Nepalis, and Sherpas in the areas of education, health, opportunity, safety, and shelter since 1981. Donations to AHF will support emergency relief today and recovery work in the months ahead.
- UNICEF is collaborating with partners on the ground to provide emergency response, deliver supplies, and offer basic services. The organization estimates that more than 17,000 children in the region need assistance and is appealing for $17.2 million to support them, their families, and communities in the region as they recover.
- The Save the Children response teams are partnering with local authorities to reunite children with their families and meet urgent needs — including clean water, health care, food, and shelter. The organization has been working in Nepal since 1976 to provide education, protection, and health.
