Second grade students from Ventnor Elementary School recently visited Historic Cold Springs Village in Cape May. The students observed historic reenactments and presentations, walked from one historic house to the next learning about the skills and trades of the 1800’s, and of course sampled the ice cream shop at the old hotel.
According to one of the teachers, the students eagerly asked questions and “were amazed at how so much can change over time (clothing, housing, technology, trades), as well as intrigued to see that some things remain the same (education, games, work ethic).”
The students’ favorite part was visiting the old schoolhouse and hearing from an actor portraying a very strict school master. Let’s hope they learned some lessons to take back to the classroom!
The visit to Historic Cold Springs Village was made possible with a grant from Field Trip New Jersey, an endowment launched by the Community Foundation of New Jersey and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to take students into new places that have the power to awaken, hush, awe, enrich, or otherwise positively change their lives.
