Paterson Public School #6 was able to take four field trips with funding from a recent Field Trip New Jersey grant. The first was to the Liberty Science Center where students participated in the Community Night (the one night per month when there is no entrance or activity fee).
Ten days later, students in the Project P.R.I.D.E. mentoring program attended Rutgers Day events on the New Brunswick campus, participating in STEM activities and enjoying the campus amenities.
Children enrolled in the school’s autism program, in grades 1-3, enjoyed their trip to see the musical Suessical at the Theater at William Paterson University.
And finally, twenty young women from schools #6 and #10 visited Seton Hall in South Orange for a campus tour and the Fabulous Me conference for girls. This annual conference, funded by the Juvenile Justice Commission, covers topics ranging from self-esteem and relationship building to academic achievement and cyberbullying.
“These field trips were important, not only for the opportunity our children had to experience the broader community, but [also] for the exposure to institutions of higher learning,” said one of the teachers. “College is often an abstract concept for many of our children, and these field trips made the idea of college more tangible, concrete and accessible to them.”
These field trips were made possible with a grant from Field Trip New Jersey, an endowment launched by the Community Foundation of New Jersey and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to take students into new places that have the power to awaken, hush, awe, enrich, or otherwise positively change their lives.
