Red Bank Seniors Win Maslow Scholarships

June 7, 2016

The Selection Committee of The Jonathan Maslow Scholarship today announced two recipients of 2016 scholarship awards. This is the seventh year in which the scholarship has been awarded to a Red Bank Regional High School (RBRHS) student, and the first year in which two students will receive the award. The Selection Committee opted to grant two awards this year to mark 50 years since Jonathan Maslow graduated from high school; all members of the Selection Committee are fellow members of the RBRHS Class of 1966.

This year’s scholarship recipients include:

Emma Craven, a graduating senior at RBRHS, is an intern with DoSomething.org where she works with the head of VIP Engagements to engage teenagers on volunteerism. With DoSomething.org, Emma has participated in more than 15 campaigns, ranging from collecting candy for troops to picking up more than 600 cigarette butts from around the community. She is a member of the National Honor Society and French National Honor Society, and participated in a scientific study in Costa Rica. Emma will attend Pepperdine University in the fall and plans to study business and nonprofit management.

Amy Cavallo, a graduating senior at RBRHS, has been the Editor in Chief of the student newspaper and an active member of the Student-to-Student Peer Leadership Program and the Future Business Leaders of America. She has been inducted into the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, National Math Honor Society, and Italian Honor Society. Amy will attend Quinnipiac University and pursue a four-year BS and MBA . She ultimately aspires to be an executive in the cosmetics industry.

The Jonathan Maslow Scholarship is awarded to students exhibiting exceptionally high levels of written proficiency, creativity, and originality, as well as an interest in local or national environmental causes, journalism, or creative writing.  The one-time $5,000 scholarship is open to all RBRHS juniors and seniors who plan to continue their education at an accredited 2 or 4-year college immediately following their graduation.

The fund was established by members of the RBRHS Class of 1966 in memory of their classmate, Jonathan Maslow.  Jonathan was an accomplished author, journalist, documentary filmmaker, naturalist, and environmentalist.  At the time of his death in 2008 he was an editor and columnist for the Herald News in Paterson, New Jersey.  His accomplishments as a journalist and his commitment to his community are reflected in the many awards bestowed on him including The New Jersey Press Association for Responsible Journalism and the Joseph M. Sklenar Editorial Award.  Never one to shy away from a challenge, Jonathan covered civil strife in Central America, helped save a library in the City of Passaic, fought vigorously to help clean up the Passaic River, and championed efforts to make politicians accountable for their actions.

The Community Foundation of New Jersey administers the fund on behalf of the Scholarship Directors.
