Somers Point Students Visit Cape May County Park

Lunch outside at the pavilion with my friends was exciting

Students from the New York Avenue School in Somers Point recently visited to the Cape May County Park and Zoo where they saw – for the first time in person – many of the animals they had been studying in the classroom.

Prior to the trip, teachers did studies of animals in their classrooms; they reviewed which animals we would see and were on the lookout for those throughout the trip. The students also studied animal habitats.

Upon return, students in each class wrote language experience stories about the trip and what they learned.

“This was an opportunity many of our students would not experience if it were not for this grant,” explained one of the teachers.

The visit to Cape May County Park was made possible with a grant from Field Trip New Jersey, an endowment launched by the Community Foundation of New Jersey and Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation to take students into new places that have the power to awaken, hush, awe, enrich, or otherwise positively change their lives.
